Should You Wear A Bra To Bed?

Wearing a bra to bed has been the subject of much discussion over the years. Some say yes, others say a definitive no, but what is the real answer to this question which seems to hold such a bone of contention? You’ve all heard the old wives’ tale that if you wear your bra to bed, you will help keep your breasts perky and stop sagging. Well, we are here to debunk the myth once and for all!

Why is wearing a bra to bed up for debate?

Some say that wearing a bra to bed will support your breasts and, therefore, keep them from drooping. There are others who say that restricting your breasts will actually harm your lymphatic system, which is designed to remove the toxins from your breasts. There are many
women, with larger boobs who find it very uncomfortable to sleep without a bra as they are heavy and move too much as they turn in their sleep, and so find wearing a bra supports them and reduces the pain.

Should you sleep with a bra to prevent sagging?

According to Dr Seth Rankin from the London’s Doctor’s Clinic, wearing a bra to bed does not prevent sagging breasts. He explains that bras are designed to support your boobs from underneath, which is important when sitting and standing during the day. However, this is as useless as soon as you lie down. Gravity naturally pushes them down towards the chest, and not down towards the toes, and therefore the bra will not support your breasts in this position.

Sadly, our boobs will naturally sag as we age, but there are a few things you can do to slow down the inevitable! Healthy eating and exercise can help, along with reducing your exposure to UV rays and smoking. Applying cream and lotions also makes a difference. These will all improve the quality and elasticity of your skin.

Why should I wear a bra to bed?

As mentioned earlier, those women with large breasts find it more comfortable to wear a bra to bed to support them. A good night’s sleep is crucial to your physical and mental health and so if wearing something that supports you will help you to get all the z’s you need, then it is fine for you to wear one to bed. A non-padded bra without underwires might be the most comfortable solution in this case.

It’s extremely important to make sure your bra fits correctly, ensuring that your bra is not too tight-fitting or restrictive. Wearing a bra which is too tight can restrict drainage from the lymph nodes around the breast and armpit, which can hinder the flushing of toxic waste from your body. It can also reduce the blood flow which can lead to inflammation, fluid retention and discomfort.

What can I wear to bed if I don’t want to go braless?

Below is a selection of the best lingerie options which are great for wearing to bed if you need a little extra support and don’t want to go braless.

Bralettes

Bralettes have become hugely popular over the last couple of years and are a great alternative to a bra. The main benefit of bralettes is that they are usually designed to be pulled over the head and so don’t have any uncomfortable clasps at the back, or underwiring. You can get bralettes with removable padding in them too, such as the Sloggi Zero Feel Bralette, which is also completely seam- free, making this bra ultra comfortable for sleeping in.

If you are looking for something that is very pretty and feminine, then a favourite of ours is the Freya Daisy Lace Bralette, with soft triangle shaped cups and on trend and geometric lace detailing. Bralettes usually do not cater for larger breasts, so if you are lucky enough to have bigger boobs, then the next option may suit you better.

Soft Cup Bras

These bras are perfect for larger breasted women. On the whole, they are full cup bras, giving you that extra support, but they have no uncomfortable wires or padding. The Rosa Faia Soft Cup bra is a must-have, with double-layered cups in smooth, silky microfiber fabric and wide straps, making this bra extremely comfortable and supportive.

Babydolls

Babydolls are lovely sexy little numbers which do give you light cradling of the breasts while you sleep. There are options available for underwired babydolls if you’d prefer a ‘date night in’ to a sleepwear ensemble. If this is something you are looking for, then this gorgeous Babydoll and Thong set by Dreamgirl in striking Magenta is a perfect choice. The lingerie brand Dreamgirl designs their sexy lingerie to fit petite to plus size and everyone in between, so this babydoll is ideal for anyone! This underwired flirty babydoll is constructed in stretch satin with a feminine stretch lace overlay, ensuring you don’t feel constricted, with adjustable straps for the perfect fit.

If you are looking for a babydoll with no wires, then the Triumph Amourette Spotlight babydoll is a perfect choice. The lightweight, soft jersey fabric ensures you feel comfortable all night long. The plunging cups are all-over lace with a cute bow at the centre front. Very pretty and very comfortable.

Chemises

If a babydoll is a little too risqué, then a chemise is a great choice. The loose-fitting, soft chemise from PJ Salvage Rayon Basics is comfortable for sleeping in, with lined, wireless cups with vertical seaming for gentle shape and support. The pretty, lace-covered adjustable straps ensure a great fit.

For a little added sophistication, the Lace Affair Chemise by Wacoal showcases intricate lace detailing on the cups and soft, luxurious fabric on the body.

Camisoles and Vests

With comfortable fabrics, these are a great choice for sleeping in. Some options offer a bra shelf, which helps to cradle your breasts as you sleep. The Freya Gracie Pyjama Top has a hidden bra for support, which helps you feel more comfortable. Pair with the Gracie full-length pants for those chillier nights.

The Chantelle Soft Stretch Tank Top is a lighter choice. Created in beautifully soft stretch knit, which is flat bonded making it seamless, this top offers maximum comfort and a great night’s sleep.

What to look for when choosing a bra for sleep

If a bra is the garment of choice, then there are a few things to consider before purchasing. It is very important to ensure your bra is the correct fit. Be kind to your body and take the time to get measured properly. Other things you might want to consider are the style, material and shape of the bra.

Seamless Bras

Seamless bras are perfect for sleeping in as they have no uncomfortable seams which will dig into your skin when you lay on them.

Wide Straps

Wide straps will help to support your breasts without digging into your shoulders and are particularly useful for larger breasts. This makes them ideal when sleeping as they are more comfortable to lay on, not interrupting your slumber.

Fabric

Great fabric choices for sleep are cotton and microfibre. Both fabrics allow your skin to breathe, helping you stay cool and not get overheated…unless you want to!

Wire or No Wire

Some ladies would rather have a wired bra, but we would recommend that you choose a bra which doesn’t have uncomfortable wires when you sleep. There are plenty of soft-cup bras available which are still very supportive and without the wires which can dig into your sides and cause discomfort. For the bigger breasted ladies, we suggest you choose a full cup bra which will give you that added support.

Hopefully, we have finally put the argument to bed. If you feel more comfortable wearing a bra to bed, then go ahead, just ensure that you are wearing a bra which is fitted correctly. There is an array of other choices out there for sleeping in; comfortable, sexy and supportive sleepwear to suit everyone.
